Lab Report: Bending Light with Water and a Laser

Abstract:
This experiment investigates the bending of light using a green laser and a stream of water, demonstrating the principle of total internal reflection. The green laser beam was directed at the point where the water flows out, and it followed the curve of the water stream due to the refractive properties of water and air. The results confirmed that the light, when trapped inside the water by internal reflection, can follow a curved path. The objective of this experiment is to observe the phenomenon of light bending by using a green laser and a stream of water flowing from a bottle. This experiment demonstrates the principle of total internal reflection and how light can follow a curved path due to the refractive properties of water.

Introduction:
The study of light and its behavior as it travels through different mediums has been a fundamental aspect of physics. One of the key principles that govern the interaction of light with materials is refraction, the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another with a different refractive index. Closely related to this is the phenomenon of total internal reflection, where light reflects entirely within a medium, such as water, instead of passing through the boundary into a second medium, such as air. This principle is integral to the operation of fiber optics, where light is guided through curved paths inside optical fibers without escaping. When light enters the water stream at an appropriate angle, it is internally reflected within the curved stream, making the light beam appear to bend alongside the water. This experiment serves as a practical demonstration of how light can be manipulated and contained within a medium, enhancing ourunderstanding of optical physics and its applications in technologies such as communication and imaging systems. This experiment will show how the light will bend.

Materials:
*Empty 16.9 oz plastic bottle with a small hole near the bottom.
*Green laser pointer

*16.9 oz Water.
*Tape or clamp to hold the bottle in place
*Dark room or controlled lighting conditions

Method:
1. Fill the plastic bottle with water and ensure it is securely positioned so thatwater can flow freely from the hole near the bottom.
2. Once the bottle is set up and the water starts flowing, aim the green laser pointer at the point where the water exits the bottle.
3. Observe the behavior of the laser light as it makes contact with the water stream.
4. Record the observations of how the laser light travels along the stream of water.

Results:
When the green laser was directed at the point where the water began to exit the bottle, the laser light appeared to “bend” and follow the path of the water stream. Instead of continuing in a straight line, as light normally does in air, the light beam curved along with the flow of the water.

Discussion:
The results of this experiment illustrate the principle of total internal reflection, where light is trapped inside a medium (in this case, the water) due to the difference in refractive index between water and air. When light hits the boundary of water at a specific angle, it reflects back into the water instead of refracting out into the air. This phenomenon allows the light to follow the path of the water stream, creating the visual effect of “bent” light. This effect occurs because as the water flows out of the bottle, it bends due to gravity. The light is internally reflected within the water stream because of the difference in refractive index between water and air. This total internal reflection causes the light to follow the curvature of the water, making it appear as though the laser beam is bending. This principle is the same one used in optical fibers, where light is guided along a curved path by repeated
internal reflections within the fiber’s core. The bending light effect observed in this experiment is a simple yet effective way to demonstrate how light canbe manipulated using different media. The results show that the light bended.

Conclusion:
The experiment successfully demonstrated the bending of light using a greenlaser and a stream of water. The green laser light followed the curved path ofthe water due to total internal reflection, confirming that the behavior of lightcan be altered by the refractive properties of the medium through which it travels. This experiment allows us to detect distant celestial objects that would otherwise be invisible.Acknowledgments:Thank you to the creators of the YouTube video on the physics experiment involving light bending, which served as an inspiration for this lab. The visualdemonstration and clear explanation of the concept of total internal reflection greatly contributed to my understanding of the experiment’s methodology and results
